Platter turning course, for those woodturners who what to try their hand at something larger.
The Platter Woodturning Course.
Designed for woodturners who have some woodturning experience. If you would like to try your hand at turning that larger piece of wood then this woodturning class is for you.
My platter woodturning course shows you the safety aspects of dealing with large pieces of wood. The best ways to mount the wood on the lathe and the tooling skills required to tackle this type of project.
We will aim to turn a platter of around 16″ to 20″ in diameter but we can turn much larger pieces if you wish (there would be an extra charge for bigger blanks). We can either turn the platter outboard on my Axminster AT1628VS trade series lathe or we can use my VB36.
My workshop is fully equipped to take on almost anything you can think of. You could just turn a lovely piece of wood and finish it with a nice warm shine. Maybe enhance your platter with one of the many different techniques that I apply to my own work.
On the day we would cover all the safety aspects for turning and what to look out for when selecting our timber. We would then select our piece of wood and plan our design. Once we have formulated our design we can mount the timber on to the lathe. Then the fun begins of turning the platter’s outside shape and creating a solid mounting point so we can reverse the blank and turn the face.
Lunch and refreshments are supplied, so there’s no need to bring anything. Should you wish to bring your own tools you’re more than welcome.
